Icy Waterfall at Lake Catherine State Park

Icy Waterfall at Lake Catherine State Park

Frigid temperatures aren't always fun to hike in, but they can reward you with some rare and beautiful scenery! I decided to trek out to Lake Catherine State Park this morning to see if there were any icicles at the waterfall. I was greeted by a beautiful but brief splash of color as I began my hike. The color literally only lasted for about 10 minutes and then a thick overcast sky set in for the rest of the day.

Seven Hollows Trail at Petit Jean

Seven Hollows Trail at Petit Jean

We had some rain recently so I was hoping to find some waterfalls. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to make the trip to the Ozarks so I decided to something closer. Most people know about Cedar Falls, the big one at Petit Jean. A lesser-known waterfall can be found on Seven Hollows Trail, which I had never hiked before. What a beautiful trail! Winding Stairs Trail in the Fall

Winding Stairs Trail in the Fall

A friend and client of mine knew I was looking for some fall colors to photograph and he had a great recommendation: Winding Stairs Trail. I had never heard of this trail even though I had been through Albert Pike Recreational Area a few times before. The trail head is easy to find as it's only 2 miles from the entrance into the park. Here is my GPS track of my hike. Check the GPS info here: http://cloud.gaiagps.com/datasummary/track/50bc351e965b188e94afed40b1a32789/ The trail I'd say is "moderate" and the level of difficulty depends on how far you plan on trekking in. There are a couple...

Pinnacle Mountain Hike

Pinnacle Mountain Hike

As crazy as it might sound, I had never hiked to the top of Pinnacle Mountain until recently.  I'm only about an hour away from this beautiful spot, but this was my first visit. Let me preface this by saying that I was a little over-confident!  I run a decent pace for a mile and run for about 5 miles.  The hike up Pinnacle is only about 1.5 miles round trip.  Well, add on top of that about 20 pounds of photography gear, a tripod, and a constant vertical incline and you end up with a very humbled Todd!

A Road No More

I took a short hike along the top of Hot Springs Mountain the other day.  Along the way, my journey took an unexpected turn that was quite interesting. I quite literally took "the road less traveled."

Falling Water Falls and Keefe Falls (almost)

Falling Water Falls and Keefe Falls (almost)

Had a great time Saturday with some friends and my nephew, Ethan.  We've had some great rainfall which is odd for Arkansas in the Summer so we headed to north Arkansas to get some waterfall pictures.  When we arrived, there was big storm going through which made the shoot challenging and the water was roaring!

Dam Mountain Trail

After visiting the cascades at the Ross Foundation, I still had some time so I went to Lake Catherine State Park.  I go here a lot as it's a beautiful park.  I had never hiked the Dam Mountain Trail before though.  So, I made it my goal for the day!

Cascades at the Ross Foundation

Cascades at the Ross Foundation

I took advantage of my Friday morning after yesterday's rain to go and find a series of cascades at the Ross Foundation.  I had never been to this location before so it was a real treat!  The area was SLICK though so I had to be extra careful.  I slipped and slammed my tripod into a boulder at one point!

Petit Jean 1/11/2013

  • January 12, 2013

I had been chomping at the bit to get outside, explore, and take some pictures.  I had surgery just before Christmas which has kept me indoors for the most part.  I finally found time to break away and visit Petit Jean State Park!  The crazy thing was, it was mid-January and almost hit 70 degrees that day!  Typical Arkansas though... 1 day later and we're looking at possible flooding and maybe even ice storms on Sunday.  My brother joined me again as we set out on this journey.  We only had a few hours so we went at a pretty quick pace! Our first stop was Bear Cave Trail.  This leads...

Ponca and Boxley, Arkansas

  • October 20, 2012

I had heard of a lot of people visiting Ponca and Boxley, Arkansas. They are both found in Northern Arkansas along the Buffalo River area. I decided to head that way in search of fall colors and waterfalls! First, I had to con my brother into joining me. After all, a Mustang isn't exactly a good vehicle for those county dirt roads!
