Icy Waterfall at Lake Catherine State Park

  • January 9, 2014

Frigid temperatures aren’t always fun to hike in, but they can reward you with some rare and beautiful scenery! I decided to trek out to Lake Catherine State Park this morning to see if there were any icicles at the waterfall. I was greeted by a beautiful but brief splash of color as I began my hike. The color literally only lasted for about 10 minutes and then a thick overcast sky set in for the rest of the day.

When I made it to the waterfall, I was thrilled to see some nice sized icicles. I didn’t want to make the hike for nothing! These that you see on the left of this photo were about 5.5 to 6 feet long.

The ice along the rocks made for some interesting patterns.

This location actually has two waterfalls that feed into the same pool. The second isn’t all that impressive to see, but it falls from a much higher elevation as it makes it’s way down. It formed into this mass of ice covering the rocks.

As I was getting the shot, I noticed something cool that only a video would be able to capture. So, I switched to video mode and got a close-up what looks like blobs dripping down behind the ice. This was the new water coming down the mountain and it was falling behind the ice. Pretty cool!

Some more interesting patterns in the ice…

This pool is normally a pretty turquoise, but it seemed more colorful than usual this day. I don’t know if the ice had anything to do with it.

Decided to do a rare selfie at this spot:

Zooming in a bit tighter now…

So grateful that we have such beautiful scenery here in Arkansas. This place is only 30 minutes or so from my house! I hope you enjoyed this blog post. Drop me a line below. I love hearing from you all!
