Big Falls 4-26-2013

I’ve been here a lot lately, but I wanted a short trip and an opportunity to use my 10 stop ND filter.  The above photo was taken with two shots.  One for foreground and one with the 10 stop filter to make the waterfall and water silky smooth.  The waterfall ended up being a 4 minute exposure.

NOTE:  I’ve been having some issues with my theme so you might want to CLICK ON EACH PICTURE to see the best image possible.

Ok, this next photo was actually my FIRST photo of the trip.  I was driving to meet my photography friend, Denver, who was already at location waiting on me.  The sun rays were awesome!  I was bummed out that I wasn’t already there to get some shots.  I snapped this one one handed while driving.  Not the best scene, I know, but look at that sky!

While hiking to the waterfalls I saw this snail on the path.  This is a macro shot, but trust me, he was huge!  Biggest snail I’ve ever seen!  I’d guess he was the size of a quarter.  Most snails around here are tiny.

While hiking through the forest, I stopped and asked Denver if he heard that sound.  It was like rain falling, but there wasn’t any.  After awhile we finally decided that it was these caterpillars and inch worms falling from the trees.  They were EVERYWHERE!  Unfortunately I ran straight through several of their webs along the way.

I usually shoot wide landscapes and miss out on the closeups.  I made a conscious effort to get a few macros this time.  These next three are different types of moss I found near the waterfall.

Next is some sort of wildflower.  Why, oh why didn’t I pay closer attention in science class!?!?

Denver was shooting with his 70-200 today so I felt compelled to copy him a bit.  You can get some interesting, almost abstract photos this way.  Here are a few attempts at the Big Falls.

For waterfalls, I usually try to go for that silky smooth look.  Again, Denver had a cool idea of freezing time.  This was my only shot that turned out half-way decent.

Roots… I know, not overly-exciting, but I thought they looked cool.

While leaving the park and heading home, I spotted this cool barn with a field of red clover.  My wife LOVES the clover so I pulled over, risked my life crossing the street and traffic, and took these shots.  Yep, I love my wife enough to put my life on the line for her!  What’s that, honey?  Not impressed?
